    Why Use

IV infusion pumps have largely replaced this calculation in many healthcare settings, however in resource scarce settings, this is how one can calculate an infusion rate by just counting drops per minute and adjusting accordingly.

It is critical to know your drop factor; typically IV infusion tubing will include this information on its label or packaging.

Some medications must be given at a certain rate due to toxicity or side effects from infusing too quickly; other medications are vasoactive and require a constant infusion and titration in order to work correctly.
