Simplified Acute Physiology Score (SAPS) 3

Estimates the probability of mortality for ICU patients on admission.

    INSTRUCTIONS

The SAPS 3 Score predicts hospital mortality upon ICU admission, using patient characteristics, indication for ICU admission, and physiologic derangement upon ICU admission.

    When to Use
    Pearls/Pitfalls
    Why Use

Upon admission to the ICU to predict hospital mortality.

Physiologic variables are meant to be assessed within 1 hour of ICU admission.

The authors hypothesize that patient factors and circumstances surrounding ICU admission — combined with a patient's physiologic derangements upon ICU admission — gives a better picture of an ICU patient's prognosis.
