Pain, Enjoyment of Life and General Activity (PEG) Scale
Assesses chronic pain in primary care patients.
Advice
- Scores for each variable can be recorded individually or summed for trending over time.
- Follow-up questions should be guided by individual variable results, helping to set performance goals and direct treatment options.
- Scores should decrease over time with effective treatment.
- Per Reed et al. (2024), a 1-2 point improvement from baseline is considered clinically meaningful.
Management
- Lower scores (minimal impact): Reinforce existing pain management strategies and monitor periodically.
- Higher scores (significant impact):
- Adjust the pain management plan, considering pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic options.
- Evaluate for underlying psychosocial factors contributing to pain perception (e.g., depression, anxiety).
- Refer to appropriate specialists, such as pain management, behavioral health, or physical therapy, for further evaluation and treatment.
