Utah COVID-19 Risk Score
Identifies high-risk individuals who are appropriate for COVID-19 treatment (updated February 2022).
Launched during COVID-19 crisis. Not externally validated. Use with caution; this is being used in Utah for assessment, trending, and treatment recommendations.
Per the Utah Department of Health & Human Services, certain patient populations automatically qualify for COVID-19 treatment and do not need to be evaluated with this tool, including:
- Residence of long-term care, skilled nursing, or correctional facilities.
- Unvaccinated individuals ≥75 years of old.
- Those with a severe immunocompromising condition (see guidelines for specific definitions).
This score should be used only for those who do not automatically qualify.
This tool should complement, not replace, clinical judgment and should be used alongside a thorough history and clinical evaluation, only during periods of therapeutic scarcity.
According to the Utah Department of Health & Human Services, a patient qualifies for antiviral treatment if:
- They meet all inclusion criteria, including:
- COVID-19 is confirmed by PCR or antigen testing.
- They are symptomatic with symptom onset ≤10 days prior.
- They have no new hypoxemia.
- They are not currently admitted or being admitted to an acute care hospital for COVID-19 or related complications.
- Their risk score is:
- ≥8 if vaccinated.
- ≥6 if unvaccinated/incompletely vaccinated.
- ≥4 if unvaccinated/incompletely vaccinated and pregnant.
