Drug Abuse Screening Test-10 (DAST-10)

Assesses illicit drug use in the past year.

Please ask your patient the following questions about their potential involvement with drugs (excluding alcohol and tobacco) during the past 12 months.

Have you used drugs other than those required for medical reasons?

Do you abuse more than one drug at a time?

Are you always able to stop using drugs when you want to?

If the patient never uses drugs, answer “Yes.”

Have you had "blackouts" or "flashbacks" as a result of drug use?

Do you ever feel bad or guilty because of your use of drugs?

If the patient never uses drugs, choose “No.”

Do your spouse or parents ever complain about your involvement with drugs?

Have you neglected your family because of your use of drugs?

Have you engaged in illegal activities in order to obtain drugs?

Have you ever experienced withdrawal symptoms (felt sick) when you stopped taking drugs?

Have you had medical problems as a result of your drug use?

e.g., memory loss, hepatitis, convulsions, bleeding, etc.

Management
  • As the score increases, it may be interpreted that an individual has accrued an increasingly diverse range of drug-related consequences.
  • For use as a screening tool, multiple cutoff scores have been suggested in the literature, ranging from 1–4. Please refer to recommendations from your local government health entity, medical group, or healthcare system.
  • A positive screen should prompt a more comprehensive evaluation in order to solidify a formal diagnosis and initiate appropriate treatment and/or referrals.
