Neonatal Early-Onset Sepsis Calculator

Calculates neonatal early-onset sepsis risk based on maternal intrapartum risk factors.

  • Use this tool to predict the risk of early-onset sepsis in newborns who are born ≥34 weeks gestation.
  • Due to slight differences in rounding precision, you may notice minimal variations in results provided by this calculator versus others that are available.

Advice

This calculator uses the CDC national incidence of early-onset sepsis (0.5/1000 live births). Your local incidence may be higher or lower; be sure to follow local guidance.

Management
  • In addition to calculating a numerical risk level, this calculator makes recommendations for follow-up care of the newborn.
  • If no additional care is recommended (i.e., no blood culture or antibiotics), the newborn can likely be observed with routine vitals.
  • If a blood culture is recommended, the newborn should have vitals obtained every 4 hours.
  • If empiric antibiotics are recommended, consider NICU evaluation and transfer.
