Stratifies the presence and severity of obesity-related health impairments.
- This tool can be used to determine appropriate treatments and medical services for patients based on their individual obesity-related risks and complications.
- For patients undergoing bariatric surgery planning:
- Stage 3 and 4 are associated with increased risk of postoperative complications, including a higher 30-day mortality.
- Patients found to be in higher stages should be counseled on the increased risk of postoperative complications.
- However, this tool should not be used to exclude patients from surgical consideration. The benefits of surgery often outweigh the risks and should be assessed by the clinician on a case-by-case basis.
