Severity-of-Illness Score for Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (SCORTEN)
Estimates mortality risk in patients with Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and/or toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN).
The tool supports both the original SCORTEN and the revised Re-SCORTEN model.
- Red cell distribution width (RDW) and hemoglobin (Hb) are optional inputs.
- If both RDW and Hb are provided, the tool reports a Re-SCORTEN score.
- If either is omitted, the output defaults to the original SCORTEN.
Advice
- Interpret results in the context of local outcomes and evolving supportive care standards.
- Higher scores correlate with higher mortality risk.
- Results may inform discussions about prognosis and guide decisions on level of care (e.g., ICU admission, transfer to burn unit) and resource allocation.
- Evidence for direct impact on management decisions is limited; apply clinical judgment.
Critical Actions
A low score should not preclude standard, appropriate treatment SJS/TEN care.
