    Note: This calculator is not externally validated and should be used with caution. It is not intended to routinely disposition patients. The APACHE II Score may be a better mortality predictor. Use in patients with DKA.

    When to Use
    Why Use

    Patients with DKA. Study population included patients with  serum glucose >250 mg/dL (14.1 mmol/L), positive urine ketones, and metabolic acidosis (arterial blood pH <7.30 and HCO₃ <15 mEq/L (15 mmol/L).

    Provides information regarding mortality in patients presenting with DKA.

    Stamatis P. Efstathiou, MD, PhD, is an internal medicine physician in private practice and senior consultant at the Center for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases of Hygeias Melathron, in Athens. He has been co-investigator on five clinical trials and has published 40 papers. Dr. Efstathiou's research interests include hypertension and prediction models, and he has received the Alberto Ferrari Award from the European Society of Hypertension for his work.
