    Oxygenation Index

Predicts outcomes, especially in pediatric patients; helps determine need for ECMO.
    Favorite
    When to Use

Used in pediatrics to define ALI and ARDS and assess for potential ECMO treatment.

    Advice

    • OI <25: good outcome
    • OI 25-40: >40% mortality
    • OI >40: Consider ECMO

    Formula

    Oxygenation index = (FiO2 x PAW) / PaO2

    where variables are as follows:

    • FiO2 = fraction of inhaled oxygen, %
    • PAW = mean airway pressure, mm Hg
    • PaO2 = Partial pressure of arterial oxygen, mm Hg
