Advice
  • Use the results to guide care plans, including the need for caregiver support, home health services, or long-term care options.

  • Discuss the results with family members to provide them with a clear understanding of the patient’s needs and anticipated changes.

  • For AD specifically, severity can guide pharmacologic strategies:

    • Mild to moderate: Consider a trial of a cholinesterase inhibitor.

    • Moderate to severe: The addition of memantine may be appropriate.

    • Patients with early AD may be referred to a neurologist or dementia specialist for consideration of amyloid-targeting therapies.

  • Reassess periodically to monitor disease progression, as scores may change over time.
