Rebound Hyperbilirubinemia Risk Score
Estimates risk of rebound hyperbilirubinemia after inpatient phototherapy.
Use only in neonates ≥35 weeks gestational age (GA) treated with first episode inpatient phototherapy.
-
The calculator does not recommend a definitive risk level at which to discontinue phototherapy.
-
The decision to continue phototherapy should be made after balancing the risks and costs of prolonging treatment against the benefit of reducing the risk of rebound hyperbilirubinemia.
-
In the derivation study, 34% of infants may have been able to discontinue inpatient phototherapy a day earlier with <4% risk of rebound hyperbilirubinemia.
Ease of follow up TSB testing and hardship of readmission should be considered in the decision to stop or continue phototherapy in infants regardless of risk score.
